GEF IFAS will expand the afforestation area on the former bottom of the Aral Sea

GEF IFAS started formulation of the Terms of reference for afforestation of the 20,000 hectares on the former bottom of the sea.

Previously the Agency afforested 10,000 hectares in the Northern part of the Aral Sea region. Particularly two years ago the Agency planted tamarisk, saxaul  and others allowed to reduce salt transmission more than two times.

Other projects implemented by IFAS also aim to combat negative consequences of the Aral environmental crisis. USD 70 million were spent for creation of local ponds in Amudarya delta which reduced degradation and migration from the most vulnerable areas of Karakalpakstan.
